Sewage Backup / Black Water

A sewage backup happens when wastewater from a sewer line, septic system, or plumbing fixture flows back into a building instead of draining away. This water is grossly contaminated and can carry bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens capable of making people sick. The CDC and FEMA both direct people to avoid direct skin contact with sewage-contaminated water and to wear protective equipment, such as gloves and an N95 respirator, during any cleanup.
